Social Events

Medical student life isn’t only about studying, and UNEMSA promotes a healthy work-life balance by hosting numerous social events such as cocktail nights, parties and balls.

First Incision is the first major event held by UNEMSA for the year, with strong representation from all year groups.

The evening begins with a cocktail night at the golf club, accompanied by an array of canapes and a lucrative bar tab. Given that this is one of the first major events, it provides a great opportunity for first year students to party with their cohort and get to know 2nd, 3rd and even 4th/5th years. Don’t forget to memorialise the night in the photo booth!

After a few hours, the evening moves to the Railway Hotel, where the party continues. No need to stress about transport, we’ve organised buses for you. See you on the dance floor!

Med Week

Med Week is one of the most action-packed weeks of the year. It provides an opportunity for medical students across all pre-clinical years to bond with each other, as they take part in a range of activities. Previous years have included events such as scavenger hunts and bowling nights, as well as parties and other games. Each day of the week involves an event or activity, and as such, it has something in store for everyone.

Known by students as Med Ball, the annual medicine charity ball is the highlight of the social calendar, with a formal sit down dinner, performances by students and a raffle. Last year, proceeds were donated to the charity Change the Record, raising $5000.

The evening begins with a sit-down dinner and a brief show of gratitude to our sponsors, whom have donated an array of gifts that can be won in our raffle. Last year, a lucky attendee won a night’s stay at the Halycon Hotel, valued at over $1000. Not to worry though, there are more than $2500 worth in prizes to be won!

Students celebrate the past year before beginning preparations for their final exams. Canapés and refreshments will be served throughout this cocktail-like party, and as this event is the last of the year, it is again one of the most memorable for the students. Don’t forget to nominate your mates for awards!

Inter Year Sports

Offered throughout the year, Inter-year sports are a great way to relax during the semester while also getting a break from study. In 2019, participation only continued to increase at inter-year sports as the year progressed and attendees enjoy the light-hearted rivalry between the year groups. This strengthens both intra- and inter-year associations.

Friendly games of netball, volleyball, soccer, and dodgeball are the sporting highlights of the year, and at the end of the competition, the winning year gets a prized trophy, sitting in a prime location in the med common room for all to see!

Stay tuned to our Facebook group for more information about our upcoming competitions and details on how to register.

UNEMSA Sporting Teams

Do you have what it takes to score the winning penalty? Ferociously spike a volleyball to win the set? Evade defenders to score a try? UNEMSA has it all when it comes to sport – basketball, football, netball, volleyball. Almost any sport that you can think of, we offer.

They say there is no greater honour in Armidale than donning the famous UNEMSA jersey.

Not only do you get to channel your competitive spirit but competing in a UNEMSA team is a great way to build lasting friendships within the med cohort and also try something new. Our inter-year sports are also a great way to get involved and take well-earned breaks away from study. It’s a great opportunity to meet new faces in other year groups and enjoy a light-hearted rivalry.

Watch out on the UNEMSA Facebook page for updates on sports throughout 2024!

Med Revue

UNEMSA's Med Revue is a collection of skits, musical numbers and videos that is put together as a play towards the end of every year for the whole of the UNE faculty and student body to enjoy. It reflects on the achievements of the year and reiterates the humorous parts. The play is written and rehearsed over the course of several months by dedicated students, and is then performed to raise money for a nominated charity.
