This past mothers day weekend, ASPIRE held our first maternal health weekend.

We kicked off the weekend on Friday the 10th of May, as we were joined by the founder of our supported charity. David Browning founded the Barbara May Foundation only 4 years ago, and has since built a maternal health focussed hospital in Ethiopia, and is raising money to make another. We were honoured to have him come and speak to 40 people at Lazenby hall for a fundraiser lunch, and raised over $350 for the Barbara May Foundation.
Birthing Kit Assembly and Global Health Shortcourse
Saturday's focus was Zonta Birthing Kits. In association with Zonta international, ASPIRE packed and sent 600 birthing kits to mothers in need in developing countries. Inside the birthing kits was a plastic sheet, gloves, soap, string and gauze. A few simple tools for a big difference in a birthing experience. These will be airdropped in to areas of need. Additionally, a BBQ lunch accompanied the drawing of our maternal health raffle, with prizes donated by local supporting businesses.
Obstetrics and Paediatric Skills Day
Sunday was a medical student only focus, with our maternal skills weekend. Students rotated around 4 stations, exploring the causes and management of common maternal issues, such as shoulder dystocia, postpartum haemorrhage and neonatal resuscitation.
All in all our maternal health weekend was a great success! Thank you to all that participated, and keep a look out for next years events!
